Recently, BJ Ball announced the sole distributorship of Wausau self-adhesive labels in New Zealand. This follows on from Ball & Doggetts, who have carried this range for a number of years in Australia. These new products, manufactured in the USA by Wausau Coated, open a whole new world of creative possibilities when it comes to ‘off-the-shelf’ impact.
Based on Wausau’s long history in the wine, spirits and beverage market, BJ Ball’s initial range focuses on this space.
There is a huge array of facestock options available. Smooth, coloured and textured papers, metallics, fabrics, foils and even printable self-adhesive timber veneers are available. There are many advantages to selecting Wausau self adhesive labels. Firstly, the majority of their products are suitable for wet or chilled applications. Secondly, Wausau products are made to order, to your specification. They are supplied blank, ready-to-print, as a roll solution. And thirdly, most products can be printed using reel-fed offset, letterpress, flexographic, digital and HP Indigo. In addition to this, many of the facestocks are FSC® Certified. Some also contain a component of post-consumer waste, such as our fist example.
Here, we showcase a select number of the Wausau products using insitu concept designs. To explain the print and embellishments used, we’ve added a brief production overview.
Wausau Aged Agave (#W030343)
Digital CMYK
Wausau Aged Agave has a smooth, natural colour and unique texture. It is manufactured using Agave Sisalane fibres from reclaimed burlap coffee bean bags. Like most of the range, it offers excellent performance for application onto products that are stored in wet environments. Think chiller rooms or ice buckets. It is also HP Indigo approved. In this particular example, the text and graphics (including the burnt edge) have been digitally printed in CMYK. The label has then been Kiss contour cut. The base sheet is manufactured Process Chlorine Free and is FSC Certified
Wausau Crimson Flocked Marquee (#W029544)
Digital CMYK + digital gold foil
The red colour and texture of the facestock is actually a flocked material. It looks and feels like velvet. The black print and gold foil have been digitally produced directly onto the surface. This product also works beautifully for blind embossing.
Wausau Black Vellum (#W028844)
Digital silver ink + spot gloss varnish + registered emboss
This striking effect has been achieved on a densely rich black stock. The silver ink and gloss varnish have been digitally printed and then embossed.
Wausau Cherry Wood Veneer (#W025294)
Digital CMYK + digital gold ink + spot gloss varnish + registered emboss
The wood effect in this example is, in fact, the real thing. A very thin veneer of cherry wood has been digitally printed in CMYK + gold ink. The richness in the blacks is achieved with a gloss laminate. The label has been Kiss contour cut.
Wausau Birch Wood Veneer (#W025295)
Digital CMYK + digital bronze foil + registered emboss.
Similar to the previous example, this label uses another timber veneer stock. It is digitally printed in CMYK plus a bronze foil. The product name has been embossed.
Wausau Avon Brilliant White Classic Crest (#W029233)
Digital CMYK + digital gold foil + spot gloss varnish + registered emboss.
With a bright white smooth finish Wausau Avon has been digitally printed in CMYK. A digital gloss laminate and emboss has been applied to the wording ‘WAUSAU’, the picture surround and the crest. The gold strips along the top and bottom are a digital foil.
Wausau Allure Starlight (#W029026)
Digital CMYK + digital silver foil + registered emboss
This label uses the stock itself as part of the design. The textured pearlescent silver has been hot stamped using a silver foil to create a silver on silver effect. The gold coloured text has been printed using a digital CMYK (it is not a metallic).
Wausau White Casa Blanca (#W030321)
Digital CMYK + hot stamping (without foil)
This example uses a similar design to the previous version. However, it uses completely different print finishes on a different stock. The facestock has a high white matt uncoated finish which is made from a unique composition of materials. When it comes in contact with a heat source, such as hot foil stamping, it turns transparent. In this example, no actual ink or foil has been used to create the background pattern. The stock has simply been hot-stamped into a translucent finish. The text has then been digitally printed, onto the non-stamped area of the stock, in CMYK. Finally, the label has been Kiss contour cut.
